Overview

Celosia (Celosia argentea), also known as cock’s comb or Lagos spinach (in West African traditions), is both beautiful and medicinal. When used as a tea or infusion, its leaves and flowers offer several herbal benefits rooted in traditional Chinese, Ayurvedic, and African herbalism.

Why We Love It

  • Supports Eye Health

Traditionally used in Chinese medicine to “brighten the eyes,” celosia tea may help maintain healthy vision. The flowers are rich in antioxidants like beta-carotene and lutein, which support the retina and may help reduce eye strain and oxidative stress.

  • Promotes Balanced Inflammation

Celosia contains phenolic and flavonoid compounds that support the body’s natural inflammatory response. This makes it helpful for soothing internal or skin-related inflammation when consumed or applied topically.

  • Nourishes the Blood & Circulatory System

In African herbal traditions, celosia is used as a blood tonic — supporting healthy iron levels and circulation. Its mineral content can help replenish the body after menstruation or physical exertion.

  • Supports Digestive Wellness

Celosia’s gentle fiber and cooling energetics can aid digestion, relieve mild constipation, and promote gut balance.

  • Skin & Hair Health

Antioxidants and vitamin C in celosia promote collagen formation and skin regeneration, making it a beautifying herb inside and out.

  • Calming and Grounding Energy

The tea has a mild, earthy flavor with a hint of floral sweetness. Energetically, celosia is considered cooling and grounding, helping to clear excess heat (physical or emotional) and bring calm focus.

How to Use It

🫖 Brewed as a herbal tea for gentle internal support (digestion, circulation, anti-inflammatory).
🍃 Can be infused in oils or waters for mild topical or internal wellness use.
💧 Alcohol-based or glycerin extracts can be used for concentrated herbal benefits.

✨ The bright, flame-shaped flowers are thought to ignite energy and courage, making Celosia useful for intention-setting or manifesting personal power.

Energetically cooling and stabilizing, it can also help calm scattered energy while keeping one centered during meditation or ritual. Traditionally, some herbalists use Celosia to ward off negative energy and maintain clarity of mind.

A Note of Care:
Celosia may affect blood clotting or circulation because of its iron and potential bioactive compounds. People with blood disorders or on anticoagulants should consult a health professional first.
